Where It's Used

Applications of Our Glue Powder

Our raw hide glue powder is made by boiling down animal hides — including buffalo hide, valued for its strong bonding properties — to extract collagen, then drying and grinding it into a fine powder. Mixed with water and gently heated, it forms a durable natural adhesive used across a wide range of traditional and industrial trades.

Woodworking & Furniture

Joint assembly for chairs, drawers and cabinets; veneering for a strong, reversible bond; and fine inlay work like marquetry and parquetry.

Musical Instruments

A favourite among luthiers building and repairing violins, guitars and cellos, and for gluing piano keytops and action parts.

Bookbinding & Paper

Attaches spines and covers in bookbinding and repair, and helps conservators mend and restore aged or damaged paper documents.

Antique Restoration & Gilding

Preferred for authentic antique furniture repair, and used as a traditional sizing to apply gold leaf in gilding work.

Art & Craft

A key ingredient in traditional gesso for priming canvases and panels, in egg tempera painting, and in natural craft adhesives.

Specialty Conservation

Used to stabilise fragile artifacts in archaeological preservation, and to secure skins and materials in taxidermy.

Food Industry (Purified Grades)

In its purified form, hide glue is essentially gelatin — used for a range of culinary applications in food production.

Mould Making & Casting

Used to create flexible moulds for casting work, particularly in the art and sculpture industries.

Getting Started

How to Use Raw Hide Glue Powder

01
Prepare

Mix the powder with water in roughly a 1:2 ratio (one part glue to two parts water) and let it soak until fully hydrated — typically a few hours or overnight.

02
Heat

Gently warm the mixture in a double boiler or glue pot to around 140–150°F (60–65°C). Avoid overheating, as this weakens the glue.

03
Apply

Brush the glue on while it's warm, join the surfaces to be bonded, and clamp them if needed.

04
Cure

Allow the joint to cure fully — this can take several hours, depending on temperature and humidity.

Advantages
  • Reversible — can be softened again with heat and moisture, making repairs straightforward.
  • Forms a strong, durable bond, especially on wood and other porous materials.
  • Long shelf life in dry powder form when stored properly.
Limitations
  • Sensitive to moisture, which can weaken the bond over time.
  • Needs to be heated to become workable, which can be a constraint in some settings.
